Nine members of the 908th Airlift Wing participated in a career day hosted by Highland Avenue Elementary School in Montgomery for fourth and fifth grade students.

The wing has participated in this event for the past 10 years and the school continues to invite them back year-after-year.

“Your role in the community and your profession make you uniquely qualified to speak with our students about preparing for their futures,” said Sharon Brown, guidance counselor at the school.

For Master Sgt. Melvin Watts, outreach chairman for the Human Resources Development Council for the wing, events like this make him smile every day.

“I’ve been coming here for 10 years, and I still come because it feels good to be a part of the community,” Watts said. “This is a great opportunity to do something for our community and to interact with kids. These kids look up to us so it’s our job to represent the 908th and the Air Force and let these kids get to know us where we can give back to this great city.”

While Watts has been participating for 10 years, this was the first time for some of the wing members.

“This is a great opportunity to help in the community and to spend time with great kids,” said Airman 1st Class Janie Murray, who works on hydraulics for the 908th. “It feels really good to give back. I think it’s really cool to do this at such a young age, it helps give the kids an idea for their future.”

According to Brown, showing the students various careers at this point in their education is the entire point.

“It opens up different options for the kids,” said Brown. “It lets them know there are other things besides being a pro-athlete or a movie or music super star. They get to see other options that are very positive.”
