Searching For Significance Published Oct. 13, 2011 By Major David Dersch 908th Airlift Wing MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. -- As a young man I remember seeing a book titled "The Search for Significance." Although I never read the book, I still remember the title more than 20 years later. It speaks to the need of every person to be "significant." The Bible references this when it talks about God putting "eternity" into the heart of man. Accepting that everyone has a need or desire to be significant, natural follow-up questions might be "significant for what?" or perhaps "significant to whom?" Do you want to be significant because you've made a positive contribution or difference? Or is your desire to be significant just for the sake of your own self-esteem or pride. After all, Hitler was significant. In whose eyes do you want to be significant? Your friends or loved ones? Your boss? The public? Unless you live as a hermit or on a deserted island, you're going to have some impact on those around you, but this will not ultimately satisfy that search. In your own personal search for significance, consider this: the most important person to be significant to is He who created you! I'm not talking about your parents, but your Heavenly Father. Being signficant in God's sight will fulfill that desire inside your heart. And some good news is that because each of us is created in the image of God, we can all have significance!
